Asset Register Compilation
The formulation of an asset register has two specific purposes:
- To ensure all assets are recorded and to provide an inventory of all maintainable items (Note: This register can also be used as part of an accounting function).
- To form the building blocks of a sound maintenance management system CMMS.
The formulation of an asset register sounds simple but needs to be as structured as possible. It should be possible to "map" assets within a CMMS i.e. search for the asset at a specific location or systemically, rather than trawling through a list until the required asset is found. It should also be possible to group assets together e.g. view information for all air compressors and produce reports for these groups.

Asset, Sub-Asset and Sub-Assembly Lists - are defined by breaking down each plant item into its major constituent parts. This section also includes the recording, where available, of base data information for each plant item.
Plant List & Coding Structures - assets are defined with a unique asset code to allow the CMMS to manage and manipulate the assets held in the asset register.
Failure Mode Effect Analysis - is performed on each asset to ascertain its criticality and potential to fail along with the effect this may have on operations.
